 Institute Development Vision

Based on National Pingtung University of Science and Technology’s Hundred Year Development Vision, the characteristics and educational goals of the Humanities and Social Sciences Institute should respond to trends in social development and local industries to set the institutes’ development vision, which becomes the institute’s entire teacher and student body’s mutual expectation and actively pursued goal. Institute development characteristics that contain both Social Sciences and Humanities.

²  Organize structure in accordance with modern social knowledge and social changes.

²  Develop into a regional teaching center in the Humanities and Social Sciences of Kaohsiung and Pingtung areas.

²  Develop backbone and leadership talent in humanities and social science related businesses.

²  Cultivate excellent teachers and researchers in the humanities and social with related subjects.

²  Promote community, humanities and social care and cooperative relations in industries.

Institute’s Medium and Long Term Development Goal Planning

This institute will follow the University’s medium and long term university development plan (2009-2014 six-year university development plan), and consider the subjective and objective conditions of each department, institute, and center, the pulse of society, and students' development and employment direction, to set the institute’s short, medium, and long-term (2011-2019 9-year university development goals) development implementation strategy. After approval by the Faculty Development Committee and the Institute Business Committee Review, the plans will become the blueprint for the institute development. In order to achieve the institute's development vision and goals of education, the institute as a whole will have a productive environment, strengthen the organization, establish a set of regulations, encourage academic performance, develop academic vision, and set up short, medium, and long-term development goals, in order to cultivate the special characteristics and visions of the institute.

Short-term development goals

Philosophy: Settle the teachers’ academic research in order to ease the implementation of teaching and administrative counseling matters.

The institute’s short-term goals are to create a pleasant teaching and research environment; strengthen the organizational effectiveness of the institute organizations; establish the institute’s characteristic promotion rating system; settle the teachers’ promotion pressure; establish means to reward teachers for academic performance; form SIG academic communities to promote academic cooperation to support growth, as well as expand academic vision and priorities (see Table 1).

The short-term goals include:

Ø   Strengthening university organization.

Ø   Settling the teachers’ research.

Ø   Teaching excellence plan.

Ø   National Science Council Plan.

Ø   Central and regional research project plan.

Ø   Multicultural industry-university cooperation plan.

Ø   Employment program.

Ø   All types of academic exchange activities and seminars.

With the aims to promote Humanities and Social Science Institute’s integration of “creative teaching, academic research, and industry-university cooperation,” proceed with “humanities and society” subject integration, and realistically implement the academic theory and practical application of “social science and social services.”

Medium-term development goals

Philosophy: In response to trends in social development, and survival of the fittest, we must re-inspect the institute’s organizational structure and mission of the university teachers.

First, the institute will work hard towards existing foundations for the institute’s medium-term goals, and reach the set goal of the year.

Secondly, during the development of the medium-term stage, we will meet strict challenges from “rapidly changing population structure in social development.” At the same time, the institution’s organizational structure and the university teachers are bound to face consolidations, so early active solution planning is imperative.

As mentioned above, the institute’s medium term development goals include the following points: in response to changes in population structure. We must broaden the source of students and the consolidation of teachers; deliberate on cost cutting, academic performance and resource allocation methods; observe and assess newly recruited teachers; apply to set up a Ph.D. Program; encourage cross-department, cross-strait, governmental, and NGO overseas internships, encourage the establishment of a Double Degree Program; and continue to promote academic exchange activities to encourage academic performance (see Table 2).

The institute’s medium-term development goals will use both successful examples and modes of cooperation as the basis to promote interdisciplinary research and industry-university cooperation resources, and stabilize the overall integrated effectiveness of “creative teaching, academic research, and industry-university cooperation.” Facing the impact of social development, there is more need for advancing the characteristics of the institute’s departments. Teachers must shoulder more cost cutting, broaden the source of students, and maintain the necessary academic performance. The instituted must hold "stabilizing the Institute’s individual organizational unit" as the highest principle.

Long-term development goals

Concept: Without hardship, how would the results come?

While continuing to observe the trends in social development and population change, the department will consolidate, and with the overview of student sources, the institute’s long term goals will use existing foundation to continue to improve and achieve the institute’s development vision. That is, integrate the consensus of the entire institute staff, particularly towards “the university’s characteristic position and the task of stages of development," “curriculum planning and department integration," "teaching resource distribution and integration," "academic and industrial cooperation that develop social services,” and “academic achievement of professional performances.” Combining university development, local characteristics, the public sector, industry, and the resources and influence of sister universities, we continue to build the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology’s Humanities and Social Sciences Institute into the development base for “general knowledge, language, early childhood care, education, social work, cultural industries and health and leisure” talents. It is an important place for academic research, industry-university cooperation, and exchange.
